Deer Hunter - 2007
After more than 25 years Wayne McEwan is parting ways with his truck.
Last week the co-owner of Ryal Bush Transport bid farewell to his truck Deer Hunter, which will now join the collection at the Bill Richardson Truck Museum.
The private museum is home to a large collection of trucks belonging to the late Bill Richardson, owner of the H W Richardson Group Ltd.
Part of the Ryal Bush Transport fleet for 28 years, the museum’s new acquisition had seen “every nook and cranny of New Zealand”, Mr McEwan said.
The ERF truck had travelled 3.4 million km since its purchase in 1980 and boasts a 350 horsepower motor and a 15-speed Road Ranger gear box.
Originally the truck’s purpose had been to transport deer around the country, although it had since carried many types of livestock, and even a zoo.
Five years ago the Richardson Group bought half of Ryal Bush Transport, so it was somewhat appropriate the truck be added to its museum, Mr McEwan said.
“There’s no better place for it to be.” Museum curator Ian Ridd said Deer Hunter was one of 10 trucks to be added to the collection in the next week, just in time for a special private event being held in honour of Mr Richardson this weekend.
Trucks in the museum’s collection date between 1911 to 2003 and include rare vehicles such as a 1939 Dodge Airflow Texaco tanker, one of only three in the world.
